Why bury our solid waste in the ground when we can gasify it with plasma? There are now plants in Japan and Florida that consume thousands of tons each day, consuming waste that would have presented a threat to the environment. During processing, the waste materials are heated to extremely high temperatures, breaking down exotic or harmful compounds into their basic constituents. One byproduct is syngas, which is used to drive turbines and generate electricity. Not only do the plants generate enough energy to cover their operating needs, they have excess to put back into the grid. What can the average consumer do to drive this approach to waste? In addition to contacting city, state, and federal representatives, we can educate ourselves about the technology, contact thought leaders, developers, and municipal waste management firms to let them know we want this technology in our area.
