Westminster College
I am an Environmental Studies Major at Westminster College in Salt Lake City. I am pursuing a career in environmental justice in which I hope to combat environmental racism on the grassroots level. I would like to work one-on-one with community members in this pursuit because I believe personal action by oppressed communities is the most effective and meaningful way to promote this sort of change in society. I also love my environment and try to live sustainably. I’m an avid enjoyer of wilderness excursions especially hiking. I belong to the UCAN Serve AmeriCorps Program and Westminster College’s Service Learning Scholar Program. Here are some of the organizations I have in the past and currently serve in my community: Habitat for Humanity, the Community Food Co-op of Utah, Salt Lake County Aging Services, Red Butte Gardens, The Utah Food Bank, The Road Home, The Sorenson Multi-Cultural Center, and YouthLINC. I am also a member of our campus’ chapter of STAND an anti-genocide coalition, Salt Lake Saves Darfur, and the Sierra Club. I work as a student employee at the college’s Center for Civic Engagement. There I help with programs such as SLICE-Student Leaders in Civic Engagement, Westminster College’s Habitat for Humanity, Westminster’s Community Food Co-op of Utah, and various other initiatives promoted by the center. Through my position I hope to share the benefits I’ve received through service learning and consequently encourage other students to have meaningful college experiences by also participating in service learning. Generally, I have an interest in many issues and I’m willing to spread myself very thin by doing what I can to aid any just cause.
