Hi, I am a thirty-something woman who is interested in and advocates for contemporary American Indian issues. In the past few years I traveled to over two hundred American Indian reservations and worked with Rev. Bryan Eaglehelper to shed the light on issues facing Native Americans in the present, and to create ways each of us on the reservation and off can help contribute to the benefit of individuals and tribes. We focused on positive impacts through positive statements and actions. I studied cultures but never did I gain as expansive understanding till I traveled and met with tribal councils, elders, youth, spiritual people, artists and surrounding non-Indian communities as well as with government officials, clergy and celebrities discussing health, culture, current policies, environment, history, arts, addictions, disabilities, religion, customs, casinos and economics among other topics. Rev. Eaglehelper rode his electric wheelchair through all of these reservations as well as state capitols meeting with Tribal leaders, Tribal Business councils, Governors, Senators, Congressmen/women, Mayors, regular folks on the rez and off, celebrities, athletes, business folks, amassing an impressive amount of information as well as leaving some good behind. He was actively raising awareness about disabilities, chronic illnesses and policies facing Native Americans and tribes, and positive things that can be done to be a win-win situation for tribal and federal government. American Indians typically are pigeonholed into a small window - I hope to raise awareness of the needs of individuals and tribes throughout the country - issues ranging from debilitating chronic illnesses such as diabetes, kidney failure and amputation to economics of gaming, and contemporary policies tribes and individuals have to face every day. I firmly believe in sowing seeds, everyone can participate in helping someone somewhere. I have been active with Eaglehelper.org and its new campaign of Keep the Spirit Strong. Please check it out.
